Every expert
was once new.
For years, gaming felt like a language everyone around me spoke except me. My gamer friends could talk about quests, bosses, builds, and favorite worlds for hours, while I smiled, listened, and quietly wondered if I had missed my chance to join in. My nephews and younger family members made it look effortless. They could pick up a controller and disappear into an adventure, and I wanted to understand what made those worlds so meaningful to them.
Then, at 47, I decided to stop watching from the sidelines. I picked up a controller with zero experience, plenty of questions, and a very real fear of looking foolish. This journey is about more than learning buttons. It is about staying curious, letting people teach me, laughing at the mistakes, and proving that connection does not have an age limit. If I can start something completely new, maybe I can meet my gamer friends and nephews in their world — and invite them into mine, too.
There will be missed jumps, wrong turns, confusing menus, and moments when my hands refuse to do what my brain is asking. But there will also be shared laughs, unexpected victories, and the kind of memories you cannot make by standing on the outside. I am documenting all of it so another beginner can feel less alone and remember that being new is not embarrassing. It is the beginning of every great story.
The goal is to keep playing — together.”
